Samuel Bromley
Sculptor
I am a London based sculptor who has just completed my Foundation Studies in Art and Design at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, and in September I will be studying a BA Fine Art at Goldsmiths.
I have a very versatile approch to my practice but I still have coherent themes that often appear within my work. In my most recent body of workI have been exploring the visual power of museum display. I have been interested in how by placing quotidian objects in particular environments their status, their value and their purpose can be affected. My work explores Dyslexia; Dyslexia is an inherited condition that can make it extremely difficult to read, write, and spell in your native language — despite an at least average intelligence. My work deals with my foreign relationship with language. By considering the alien aspect of museum objects, I became interested in how museum objects are scrutinised and studied in a similar way in which a dyslexic person has to treat language.
Other prominent themes I explore within my work include natural materials and their changes over time. I also pay close attention to how these materials sit and take up space within a gallery. Love, loss and relationships are also an area of interest for me. I am keen to explore objects in a way that communicates these ideas, and my work delves into repetition, exploring what effect it can have on an image.
