Maggie Williams
Fine Artist
I currently work as an artist obsessed with repetition and my messages are conveyed through my work using mixed media.
Low-tech, D.I.Y. processes are normally used to mock and fragment the precious and fragile kitsch objects which are loaded with personal sentiment and materialistic values. This is seen especially in ‘Chinatown #1’, a collection of hybrid ornament cats, which reinstates gesture back into ‘made in China’; mass-produced ornaments.
These spliced pieces elicit a destructive yet delicate process; the destruction is premeditated before each hybrid is produced and each new object speaks of gesture making the process of creating as important as the final product itself. They magnify and celebrate the flaws of the ornament's delicacy and their constant flux of impermanence and permanence; porcelain, a solid white compound that can last hundreds of thousands of years, yet so fragile and easily broken. The hybrid objects are satirical and seemingly celebrating the grotesque.
