Theodore V Ereira-Guyer

Theo currently studies at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. He lives and works in London and across southeast England.

Statement

I am currently exploring the role of silence and solitude and its various forms within art and the British society in which I grew up.

My intention is to examine the use of silence and solitude and how it is used to relate to ourselves and the world around us.

I have been concerned with depicting this theme through the mediums of printmaking and black & white darkroom photography. I enjoy the physicality of both the processes as well as the materiality of the finished piece. This in itself is a way for me to interact with the environment around me.

I have also been exploring sound and its installation to attempt to create silent and solitary environments and experiences. Using the act of listening to create silence within the listener and a heightened awareness of the space around them.

I am influenced by my own personal experience of solitude and silence living in London and the countryside. As well as the reading of others experiences such as Henry Theroux, St Cuthbert, Sara Maitland and the psychoanalytical studies and writings of Anthony Storr.

From this I have been looking at creationist theories and stories from across the world and the role of silence within them. My recent work has been my personal response to my ideas and thoughts of silence and noise.
