Artist’s Statement: Rosie Morris-Grove

My work is rooted in the idea of craft. It draws on the ideas of the Arts and Crafts movement and more specifically William Morris. My work echoes the beliefs of Morris of the superiority of the hand-made over the machine. Juxtaposition of the two is created through the hanging of ‘white silhouettes’ in the use of the metal rope and fixings, which are very much exaggerated and unnecessary for the purpose.

I am inspired by trees; through the ‘white silhouette’ series I wanted to highlight the naturally decorative and intricate forms of the forest. The use of light in the work enhances the delicacy and defines the shapes even more through the shadows; the light is also reminiscent of the light through the trees in the setting of a forest. By taking away colour and paint, at first glance they are not necessarily recognizable as trees but instead can be appreciated as some form of a pattern.

Through the hanging of the work I wanted to create some ambiguity as to how far it is suited for more a domestic setting or a gallery. It is hung intentionally so it is more of an object rather than parallel to the wall as a painting would be. Also, the fact that it is made from wallpaper and through its very nature should be pasted to the wall also raises the questions as to how far it is suited for that purpose, that is to say, to decorate walls.

Rosie's work is being exhibited as part of our Art Crawl. To see her work visit the Edinboro (57, Mornington Terrace, London, NW1 7RU) between 18th Aug and Sept 18th. Opening night 23rd Aug, 7pm - 11pm.
