Leo Thornborough

Fine Artist

My work is based around the progression of an image and the design; how the drawing is continuously evolving. I create landscapes in the form of drawings, which originate from photos I've taken of broken derelict religious buildings or other people’s images that I've selected. These are then in turn scanned into the computer and merged together creating new landscapes. By manipulating the images in the transformation of scale I can reveal an elusive quality, which contrasts to its original dominant form.
I have a precise drawing technique and produce work that looks faded or broken, hinting to the fragility of the piece. The work tends to harp towards a romantic idea to love and celebrate a building, which has been forgotten about in isolation. The main basis for my use of old buildings is through my idolisation of the past, which stems from the study of Greek Mythology. By using other people’s images, like Roloff Beny, I’m attempting to take their stories that are encapsulated in their images and bring this across into my own work.
I'm a recent graduate of Wimbledon College of Art with a BA (Hons) studying Print and Time Based Media.
