Caroline Jane Harris explores the universal patterns which connect the living and non-living world through geometric balance and organic exuberance. Formations in trees, the bronchi of a lung, river networks, lightning and neural activity all demonstrate fractal characteristics, shapes which occur over many scales of magnification. These are also present in society's architecture, webs and technologies, networks which humans have created share the design's of Nature's tapestry. Caroline is interested in the interconnectivity of the outlines which form the structure of the world and atmosphere, from micro to macro perspectives.
Processes and Philosophy in the Eastern world influence Carolines' work, from Ancient Chinese folk-art paper-cutting to the delineated elements of Japanese wood-block prints. The Japanese simplification of lines to convey the essence of things and Chinese concepts of Yin and Yang, complementary parts of a dynamic system, inspire the contoured kaleidoscopic symmetrical compositions. Old and new technologies juxtapose through the use of printmaking and hand-cutting techniques, to digital-printing and photography. The conception of each piece is rigorously obsessive and reflective of the attributes of fractals being self-similar. The artist's photographs are manipulated to form a semi-surreal template, and then painstakingly dissected by hand with a surgeon's scalpel. The final piece is realised through the deconstructing, re-photographing and layering of the prints, revealing a multifaceted surface with an illusory dimension beneath.
