Iam a recent graduate from Grays School of Art in Aberdeen, studying Visual Communication.
I have specialised in creating illustrations from cut white paper, using layers to create a sense of depth and originality. I have always enjoyed working with paper and I am inspired by its versatility. In my illustrations I aim to intrigue people and show a totally new and inspiring direction for paper art. My aims as an artist are to continue exploring and developing my techniques to make them ever-more exciting.
I started creating my animals by hand, but then developed onto using a laser cutter to create my work. I draw all the individual layers by hand onto the computer using a graphic tablet, separating the different parts as I go.
The work I have included are pieces which started from a project I did linked to a safari park in Scotland. I have always loved animals and using them as a subject matter allowed me to further explore my passion. I wanted to create designs which would realistically represent the animals in a new and fresh way for children to use as a reference in the Safari Park’s guide book. My designs have proven to be eye-catching and original as they contradict the fragility of paper with their bold shadows and intricate precision, making white paper stand out and transform into something special.
I plan to expand these ideas and take my styles further, experimenting with different concepts, target markets and designs. I want to push the boundaries of paper design, creating three dimensional pieces and products over a wide range of fields and avenues.
