Alyssa Phelan

My name is Alyssa Phelan, i am 19 years old and i have just obtained a merit completing a Foundation year at UAL's Chelsea College of Art and Design. Originally coming from Oxford, i moved to London to complete this year because the city is what inspires me most; the works i create all revolve around people, culture and movement. My most recent works are glimpses of the urban fabric, all based around the hustle and bustle of paths crossing in the city. The people that surround me drive me and having the opportunities to visit galleries this year has been a real inspiration; I have been particularly inspired by Merlin James, Willem De Kooning, and Dawn Mellor, looking at their variety of works, their methods, the materials they use and what has actually inspired them for creating their works. I have also been reading which has helped me think about the importance of image, as well as watching / mildly analysing well-directed film. With my course over now, i am currently back at my family home in Oxford for summer before returning to London to begin a BA Fine Art Degree at the London Metropolitan University. I plan to use the summer as a sort of social documentary of all this spare time i suddenly have and as a way of reflecting on the feeling of de ja vu as i go back to living as i used to with all these familiar faces surrounding me again, and studying the changes these people may have gone through over the time i've been away.
I have sold some pieces before in and around school during my A levels and plan on also joining in other exhibitions that will be starting up over summer in oxfordshire. I would like to take my work further by working in a more 3d approach with objects i find rather than shaping pieces myself.
