Claire Jenkinson

Fine Artist

I am continuing a series of work which transcribes natural elements and merges them with bright atypical colours in a surreal and visually powerful way. My practice is built up in stages using sketches, photography and photo manipulation programs. I stem my mark making from a study of contours curves and shapes of natural forms, such as trees, leaves and stones. In some places other organic props from different locations have been included.

I have elaborated the aesthetic quality of the painting by using some primitive tools in which to paint. Some brushes I have constructed myself from found natural materials such as leaves and sticks.

The painting side of my practice is largely about my relationship with the painting and the canvas. I like to leave a trace of my presence in each painting and the emotions that I feel when I paint it. There is also a lot of layering involved. I continually stand back and question the marks that I make. I feel that the layers create an interesting history to the paintings. In this way there is a depth and a reason behind them. I like the viewer to see the paintings from a subjective standpoint.

My practice is influenced mainly by expressionist paintings of the Modernist movement, which have a powerful viewing impact; I am also fond of Surrealism and cave paintings.

I intend to continue making more work which experiments with mark making possibilities. Painting with new materials and continually finding more ways to produce powerful and thought provoking pieces.
